Here is another totally underrated modern composer in my humble opinion. A guy who came into my sphere of musical fascination way back in 1990 through the pages of Wire.He passed away in 1005 and was norninthat forbidden land of South Korea - readers ,i am talking about Isang Yun. Je later lied in Germany , and thanks to labels like CPO and Col Legno we can hear his music.

Here is an interesting fact gleaned from Wiki -
“From October 1959, Yun had been living in Krefeld, Freiburg im Breisgau and Köln (Cologne). With a grant from the Ford Foundation, he and his family settled in West Berlin in 1964. However, due to acts of espionage, he was kidnapped by the South Korean secret service from West Berlin on 17 June 1967. Via Bonn he was taken to Seoul. In prison he was tortured, attempted suicide, forced to confess to espionage, threatened with the death sentence - and in the first instance sentenced to life imprisonment.[2] A worldwide petition led by Guenter Freudenberg and Francis Travis was presented to the South Korean government, signed by approximately 200 artists, including Igor Stravinsky, Herbert von Karajan, Luigi Dallapiccola, Hans Werner Henze, Heinz Holliger, Mauricio Kagel, Joseph Keilberth, Otto Klemperer, György Ligeti, Arne Mellnäs, Per Nørgård, Karlheinz Stockhausen, and Bernd Alois Zimmermann. Isang Yun was released on 23 February 1969, returning to West Berlin at the end of March. In 1971, he obtained German citizenship. He never returned to South Korea. From 1973 he began participating in the call for the democratization of South Korea and the reunification of the divided country.”

I was in the lovely town of Sandwich when i found all his extant symphonies going for a song at a chazzer for two quid - that's three CD’s of wonderful music on the CPO label - he did six in all Kammermusik was not one of them, which was the first of his that was reviewed by Wire way back in 1990.

Pics From Sandwich

I took these in the picturesque town of Sandwich, a cinque port that has retained much of its historic character, and narrow streets that make it difficult for double deckers to get around.
The town was having a folk festival and and unique stuff on market stalls.
I did my charity shop visit here and picked up a cardigan and a DVD for four quid - the DVD being the classic fantasy sci-fi film Barbarella.
