Top Find of The Day
Sep. 29th, 2020 01:53 pmWell, what a lovely day it has turned out to be with warmish sunny weather in the ascendant. Not only that but I found the absolute bargain of the day in the Oxfam shop here in Faversham. The complete Wagner Ring Cycle on 14 CDs in a box set for just six pounds. I checked on eBay that new it is £59.99 and £22 – 30 very good to excellent condition.

These are four seperate operas that make up the cycle.
Das Rheingold
Die Valkure
Siegfried
Gotterdammerung
The Penguin Guide to Classical CDs called it "One of the greatest achievements of the gramophone"

Word Of The Day
Sep. 29th, 2020 10:09 pmToday's wondeful word was inspired by listening to opera from Germany.
Gesamtkunstwerk
NOUN
Literally "total artwork", frequently translated as "total work of art", "ideal work of art",[ "universal artwork", "synthesis of the arts", "comprehensive artwork", or "all-embracing art form") is a work of art that makes use of all or many art forms or strives to do so. The term is a German loanword which has come to be accepted in English as a core term in aesthetics.
The German opera composer Richard Wagner used the term in two 1849 essays, and the word has become particularly associated with his aesthetic ideals. In the 20th century, some writers applied the term to some forms of architecture, while others applied it to film and mass media.
Wagner - Die Walküre [Valkyrie] Act I, Prelude
Production by Robert Lepage at the Metropolitan Opera, 2010-12
Conductor: James Levine
Jonas Kaufmann (Siegmund), Eva-Marie Westbroek (Sieglinde)
