A much warmer and sunnier day after yesterday's soaked-out coldness.

I popped over to Hempstead Valley, Medway to do a shopping mall visit, and then Sittingbourne to do a tile company.

I also visited the Sunburst Bookshop and bought eight more classical CDs for two quid -

Dvorak - Quintets Op. 81 & 97 (Supraphon)
Khachaturian - Piano Concerto, Violin Concerto etc (Decca Duo)
Borodin - The Essential Borodin (Decca Duo)
Prokofiev - Ivan The Terrible, Alexander Nevsky, etc (EMI)
John Barry - The Beyondness Of Things (Decca)
Kalinnikov - Symphonies 1 & 2 (Olympia)
Giya Kancheli - Symphonies 3 & 6 (Olympia)
Glazunov - Symphony No. 8, Ballade (Olympia)

Nice listening to do over the weekend.

All are classical from Sunburst Books in Rainham -

All for a total of three pounds.

Well, it started a sunny day but now it has clouded over. I feel that we could have rain today. As far as I am aware, we did not have rain yesterday although it was forecasted.

I was waiting for a piece of furniture to arrive but that did not happen due to other circumstances. However, I did have a good chat with Dawn midday in the common room where I had cooked my pizza for lunch. Join the Hat popped in because his daughter gave him some red wine which he does not drink, saw me, and asked if I was interested in a bottle of red, to which I confirmed, and this started drinking from one of my wine glasses after I consumed my pizza.

A couple of CDs dead cheap arrived today. A Sea Symphony by the great Vaughan Williams and Smetana's Ma Vlast.

Music is the best solution to settle a savage heart. Music is universal and every dictator or tin pot crazy should listen to music because maybe they will be better people, hopefully.

My first day of work of the New Year. I popped over to Strood end of Medway City today. Had to do one of these one-pound store visits. I also popped into Rainham to Sunburst Books and bought three classical CDs for a quid.

These are –
Mussorgsky – Pictures At An Exhibition (Ravel orch.)

Max Bruch – Symphony no.1

Saxophone Concertos (Marco Polo CD)

It was a sunny but very cold day, just reached 6C during the afternoon.

Well, no more work till next week. I do have some online work though which means I do not have to travel in the cold.

Before I went to Sittingbourne yesterday I headed to Rainham first to visit Sunburst Books because they do three CDs for a quid and have a huge range of classical music on their shelves. So after a good hour, I came out with this lot.

I asked the lady behind the counter how much and she said three pounds. A splendid bargain I thought.

So we have -

Mozart - 15 Symphonies (5 CD box)
Shostakovich - Symphony No.8
Shostakovich - Film Music 2CD set
Smetana - Ma Vlast
Vaughan Williams - Symphony No. 5 and 9
Vaughan Williams - Symphony No. 5 / Concerto For Two Pianos
Vaughan Williams - Sea Symphony
Soundtrack Music to Serenity
American Beauty O.S.T.

This will keep me busy over the next few days.

In Rainham outside the record shop, there was a big box of LPs, any of which you could select to take for free, including classical. I found these three -

Inside the charity bookshop just a few doors away I found three classical CDs for a quid, of which two were still sealed.

And from the Oxfam shop in Gillingham   some CDs for 20 pence each!!!

Definitely a great day for finding great music cheap.

I decided not to do any work today. I just popped into town. I had a few beers and bought some vinyl totaling three quid.

These are the LPs found -

And a couple of CDs for fifty pence!

All from the chazzer next door to the pub.

I was going to post the other finds tomorrow but I decided to do that now -

Just one book and a few CDs at around fifty pence each. The book was a quid.

A Little History of the World by E. H.…

That is now complete.

As you walk up from Rainham station towards the main road, the A2, you will come across a bookshop. It does not look much from the outside but inside it is a cornucopia of books and CDs!

This is where I get all my classical CDs for "three for a quid". This also means that their DVDs are also three for a quid and you can mix them with the CDs.

Loads of Naxos labels here. Pop and other music to the left.

More classical, some on Marco Polo label and other stuff like soundtracks and so on.

Even more CDs here and these draws in the cabinet contain even more CDs of all  genres.

Plus more CDs, boxsets and books.

You could easily spend all day there perusing!!

Well, what a lovely warm day it turned out to be. Even better I had that wonderful food and drink covert visit in Rainham I mentioned yesterday.

Also, as Ewart was almost skint till tomorrow, he had a free lunch from me and free beers.

But before he came to join me in the afternoon, I perused the chazzers and Sunburst Books. The latter has loads and loads of CDs and all cheap. Three for a quid. I came out with 12 of them plus one from another shop for a quid;

In other words, when a new vinyl may cost thirty quid I found 13 perfectly playable CDs for thirteen quid!

Some jazz, some blues and rock, and lots of classical.
jazzy_dave: (Default)
As mentioned here is the haul from yesterday.

Ten CDs at twenty pence each and three a quid each - via Oxfam and another charity shop.

Well, it seems the weather was being moribund and infuriating. Started cool and overcast, then sunny for a while and then some rain, before deciding to have a very sunny late afternoon.

I popped into town to put that tax rebate cheque into my account, a posting of two CDs I sold on Discogs, and pick up the latest Wire magazine, as well as pop into my local pub for some drinks and fish and chips.

On my charity shop excursion next door to the pub, I picked up another version of Mahler's Second Symphony for a quid. On my return home three CDs had arrived - one from my brother - another interpretation of Rachmaninov's Second and Third  Piano Concertos, a Charles Wuorinen CD, and Lester Bowie's The Great Pretender.

So in all, a wonderful day.

Now then, whilst CD cases can be problematical, the cardboard packaged ones can present even more problems. CD packaging in general can be infuriating, but now we address a specific problem: how to get the damn discs out of their absurd package. Hurwitz investigated this and the winning implement may surprise you -

Music Chat: CD Surgery--Extracting Discs from Stupid Packaging

I have similar problems with Bob Dylan's Rough And Rowdy Ways CD and that Prince Purple Rain triple Cd and DVD set in similar awkward packing.

jazzy_dave: (Default)
In one of the smaller charity shops in Chatham - that is less well known than the majors - I picked up five CDs for two quid -
And mostly classical.

Sergei Rachmaninov - Piano Concerto no.2 / Vocalise / The Bells / Rhapsodie on A Theme Of Paganini / Symphony no.2 (DG Double)

Sergei Rachmaninov - Piano Concerto no.2 / Rhapsodie on A Theme Of Paganini / Preludes (DG)

Richard Strauss - Four Last Songs / An Alpine Symphony (Sony)

Nilsson - Harry / Nilsson Sings Newman (Camden)
Oscar Peterson - Night Train (verve)

All five for two quid. Bargain!

It has been a long day with a horrible rainy start followed through by a windy warmer and sunnier afternoon.

I had an exit poll survey to do in Folkestone today which meant catching the bus sometime after seven in the morning to get there. Fours work interviewing customers with a head visor on.

I feel right knackered at the moment. Just had a shower which helped and some chili dish.

At least I came out with a large haul of CDs after the survey before going home. All a quid or less.

These are -

Dianne Reeves - I Remember (Blue Note)
Sarah Vaughan - THe George Gerswhin Songbook (Roulette)
Tony Remy - Metamorfollowing (All Note)
Count Basie - Basie's Bounce (Charly)
Steve Coleman And Five Elements - Def Trance Beat (Novus)
Ruben Gonzales - Introducing (World Circuit)
Buckshot Lafunque - Buckshot Lafunque (Columbia)
John Mayall - The Turning Point (Polydor)
Cressida - Cressida / Asylum (BGO)

Got some relaxing and listening to do.

Thankfully doing nothing tomorrow.

Well, expecting it to rain but it didn't thankfully. It was dull, overcast and cold though. However, it was fine for the two visits I did for one of my companies in Dover this morning.
After that, I finished in Canterbury looking around the charity shops and book shops. I found some wonderful bargains, the best being the Dancehall CD on Warp for a quid as normally, second hand, it sells for a tenner. The other great bargain is the nine CD box set of J.S.Bach sacred music on Deutsche Grammophon for £4!!

So these are the CD's found today -

Sabres of Paradise - Haunted Dancehall *Warp)
J.S Bach - Sacred Vocal Works / John Ellliot Gardner (DG Archiv 9CD Box)
Wendy Carlos - The Well Tempered Synthesiser (East Side Digital)
Ian Dury - Hit Me! The Best Of Ian Dury (BMG 3CD)
Amy Winehouse - Frank (Island)

These were the books -

So a very productive day.
jazzy_dave: (Default)
Well, another cool day with some sunshine. Still too cold, so I had a spicy hot chilli dish with rice, and overdid the ghost chillis a bit. However, it did warm me up no end!

I was listening to Schubert lieder in the morning and then some knotty Elliott Carter string quartets. Then on a different tack, I listened to the new Paul McCartney CD .. eh what you say .. yep, Paul. It came out in December 20202 during the lockdown and all the instruments on the CD are played by him and got a review in Wire magazine in the February issue.

I love the album. Just 44 mins. long but already high in rotation on my system. Comes in a cardboard sleeve which CD has no inner sleeve. Why do they not include an inner sleeve these days as CD is liable to get scratched if not carefully inserted etc?

On to some classic Van Morrison albums in my collection. Well, actually just three at the moment and I know he did some great albums and some less so. The Wire did a best of the Van article back in the early nineties. Checking - Yes, October 1991.

jazzy_dave: (Default)
Well, it actually turned to be a fine mostly sunny day. I popped over to Canterbury for a visit. I wanted to check out some charity shops to see if I could get any bargains. I found these today -

jazzy_dave: (Default)
