Well, after all the hooley of a racuius night of gales and rain, today it is a winter's sunny day of much milder clime. I thus ent for a walk around the village area and ended up at the local convenience store and bought a dozen eggs for my favourite eggs on toast mornings.

So, on the whole, I have been reading, mostly, the exploits of Charles Ryder and Sebastion Flyte. That to all you literati should indicate what novel I am reading.

Meanwhile, I have been listening to some modern classical music, specifically from Alan Hovhaness and Dominic Muldowney, and followed it with Jeff Parker's "Suite For Max Brown" - the Max being Maxine Parker-Philips, nee Brown,, his mother.

Suite For Max Brown (CD, Album) album cover

This was number six in the Wire Best of 2020.

Wire said "The guitarist for Chicago post-rock group Tortoise, on the side Parker has built a reputation as a skilful jazz sideman and solo composer in his own right. A companion to 2016’s The New Breed, Suite For Max Brown mixed up a digital composition and jazz improvisation, drawing from John Coltrane and Joe Henderson along the way. John Morrison said: “Whereas The New Breed was brash, upfront and funky, Suite For Max Brown is soft and elegant… Complex, challenging and infused with a warm familial glow.”

So, as I have been a lifetime lover of jazz and all its branches, I wonder want this young lad thinks - Deep Cuts is a vlog for music nerds like myself.

5 Albums To Get You Into JAZZ

Well, all five albums he mentions are definitely ones I would choose - oh wait a minute - I have them all. Well, to be precise, the Ornette Coleman I have in a box set of Ornette's Atlantic albums.

And then there is jazz fusion and again I certainly go for four of them as I have all four.

5 Albums to Get You Into JAZZ FUSION

1) Miles Davis - Bitches Brew (1970)
2) Mahavishnu Orchestra - The Inner Mounting Flame (1971)
3) Return To Forever - Romantic Warrior (1976)
4) Weather Report - Heavy Weather (1977)
5) Vital Tech Tones - Vital Tech Tones (1998)

Talking of CDs from my collection that has gathered dust and needs listening to again are two by Radiohead. The wonderful "In Rainbows" and the experimental brilliant "Kid A".
So I listened to these again this evening to find that they still thrill and refresh me. Also, another great album I reconnected with is King Crimson's "Islands".

The CD version I have of Islands is an HDCD reissue from 2004. In 2009 Wire magazine did a Primer on the discography of King Crimson. There is more of a classical and jazz lilt to this album especially the title track.

King Crimson - Islands

The album cover is also great.
