Last night saw the first two episodes of TORCHWOOD,Auntie Beeb's new series spin-off from DR.WHO. John Barrowman's Captain Jack Harkness treads a nice balance between insufferable and charming and is ably assisted by Eve Myles as the naive policewoman Gwen Cooper whose curiosity provides a great way into the show. The premise is straightforward - Torchwood is an above-any-government special ops force led by Captain Jack with a remit to defend the Earth from possible alien attack. Most Dr.Who fans will know this much as Russell Davies did prepare a number of references in season 2 of the latest Doctor, and adds to the mythology in the opening episode of Torchwood by references to the end of the second series of Doctor Who.

As well as Jack, the rest of the crew consists of cocky doctor Owen (Burn Gorman),shy techie Toshiko (Naoko Mori), and enigmatic receptioist Ianto (Gareth David-Lloyd).This is a darker more grown-up drama with added violence and sex,and some wickedly delivered one-liners.There is also a very wonderful and very dark twist to the end of the first episode. The second episode was also terrific with the twist of a gaseuos cloud taking possession of a young lady making her a deadly sex-obsessed orgasmic male-killer.That is all i will divulge.
Thirsty for more - well her's a link to a Guardaian article -
