Trunk,Buckley and YouTube
Jun. 26th, 2007 11:49 pmA dryer day if a little windy So it didn't matter if i stood outside or inside.
I did pop down to Resident to buy the latest Trunk CD, the indispensable Michael Garrick "Moonscape" which origibnally was a very rare 10" LP from 1964 0f which only 99 copies wre pressed, and due to a customer coming into an Archway recird shop withan unplayed copy (as he was not into jazz) that Johhny Trunk secured a copy ,and after a god clean via an expensive cleaning amchine and subsequent remastering has made this ultr rae item available on CD for the first time. It's a corker. a classic piece of early British free form jazz. Excellent review of this lovely and short set (22 mins) in The Wire as well.
Two Lp's from the Amnesty charity shop, an avant-garde collection from French label Ades, Pierrre Boulez "Sonatine", Luciano Berio "Sequenza 1", Iannus Xenakis "Herma", Edgar Varese "Density 21.5", and Olivier Messean "Le Merle Noir". The other is a jazz vocal LP by Elaine Delnar "I've Got The Whole World On A String" (World Records). Total cost £4, making the classical LP a bargain as it is quite a rare album and highly prized by avant-gardists.
Also bought an old Tim Buckley LP "Blue Afternoon" - a claasic from beginning to end, and purchased via an American site for around $10 - as this snatch from VV explains below.
Blue Afternoon (Straight, 1969)

I have never once seen the UK issue of this one, not for any amount of money. The book price is just daft...best look across the water, where it can be relatively easily secured for under $10. Thank god that US dealers treat priceless Buckley albums like bargain-bin trash. I suppose that they were once thus though, as most copies are corner cuts. Another magnificent gatefold, this time on Frank Zappa's own Straight label, as he wanted to differentiate this stuff from his Elektra work. Not entirely sure why though, 'cos it's all sleepy, slow paced jazzy tinted tunes with stand up bass and vibes everywhere in the mix. 'I Must Have Been Blind' is well up there, but it's difficult to pick special tracks out. Beautiful stuff from start to finish!
Well can't argue with that!
Watched two DVD's this evening - "Donnie Darko, The Director's Cut" and "Carnival of Souls", a film that is quite eerie and predates Romero's "Dawn of The Dead" by seven years - this latter movie was recommended to me.
