Been listening to some reissued vinyl albums such as Minnie Ripperton's "Perfect Angel". You know i don't think reissued vinyl are as good quality as original albums. There always seem to be some imperfection and the 180 gramm heavies can sound so distorted at times. Yet when i find a perfect or mintish old vinyl it sounds really good even those thin ones of the seventies. I wonder what others have to say who collect vinyl or if you / they concur with my thoughts or have an alternate opninon. Let me know.

i tend to agree. i don't know if part of the problem may be that newer, heavier vinyl reissues are mastered at higher levels than old (most new vinyl sounds too loud and distorts on my older technics turntable), that they're using too much compression (in line with modern mastering practice of "brick wall" limiting recordings to make them as loud as possible) or if it's that many of them use "virgin vinyl" which is alleged to be inferior to a 50/50 mix of new vinyl and recycle old vinyl. i'd be interested to hear some of the 180 gm reissues on a better/newer table than mine, though...

i've got some 70s vinyl that literally feels more like a thick flexidisc than anything, but it sounds great.

It's true about some of these flimsy 70's vinyl and they do sound really good. I think you are right though about reissued vinyl being distorted in sound quality due to the fact (i believe) of them being set too high a recording level. I use a modern Rega Planar turntable with Ortofon cartrdge and they still sound inferior to old ones. I have also played them on a friend's expensive Linn Sondek set up and they even sound worse. Sorry but old is definitely betterthan new here.
