This is more than a coincidence. In the post today I received a book I bought for two quid at Amazon Marketplace called The Rough Guide To Latin Music, 100 Essential CD's which was once reviewed by Wire magazine.

I am in town, in Faversham, posting off an item I sold online, and getting some food items, and then going around the charity shops. Guess what I find for fifty pence and which is reviewed on page 99 of the above book - this very CD from 1994.

This will be my fourth album by this Brazilain singer.

Sue Steward in the book says it is her best album, and I think I concur. The highlight features the Bahian Berimbau (fiddle) of a Carlinhos Brown song.

Marisa Monte - Segue o Seco

The other Cd that I found that I did not expect to get, as it was two CD's for a quid, was the Kronos Quartet CD "Nuevo" where this classical outfit does Latin music including one by loungecore maestro, Esquivel.

Kronos Quartet - Mini Skirt (Esquivel)

Enjoy.

Two from the Americas - Brazil and the USA.

Marisa Monte - Speak Low

From the album "MM" (EMI Brazil 1988)

Aaron Neville - Lousiana 1927

From the album "Warm Your Heart" (A&M 1991)
Produced by Linda Ronstadt and George Massenburg.

Both albums are so lovely yet different. For a quid a bargain I think.

Arto Lindsay has been around or awhile so here are some of his musical offerings -

Arthur Morgan "Arto" Lindsay (born May 28, 1953) is an American guitarist, singer, record producer and experimental composer. He first achieved recognition as part of New York no wave group DNA in the late 1970s.

He has a distinctive soft voice and an often noisy, self-taught guitar style consisting almost entirely of extended techniques, described by Brian Olewnick "studiedly naïve ... sounding like the bastard child of Derek Bailey.

Although Lindsay was born in the United States, he spent many years in Brazil with his missionary parents and came of age during the influential Tropicália movement of Brazilian culture, which included musicians Caetano Veloso, Gal Costa, Os Mutantes and Gilberto Gil, as well as the visual artists Hélio Oiticica, Lygia Clark and Antonio Dias. This time of cultural experimentation and artistic cross-pollination made an enduring impact on the young Lindsay.
