High fling music.
Soundwalk Collective with Patti Smith - Peradam
The sound of Himalayan winds, sacred mantras and water rippling in the holy river Ganges, invite us to Peradam, the transcendent new album by Soundwalk Collective with Patti Smith, featuring ANOUSHKA SHANKAR, TENZIN CHOEGYAL, and CHARLOTTE GAINSBOURG. Peradam takes as its entry point RENÉ DAUMAL’s early 1940s novel Mount Analogue: a Novel of Symbolically Authentic Non-Euclidean Adventures in Mountain Climbing, in which the French writer, critic and poet mapped a metaphysical journey to “the ultimate symbolic mountain” in search of meaning. In it, Daumal introduced the idea of the “peradam”, a rare, crystalline stone – harbouring profound truths – that is only visible to seekers on a true spiritual path.
From the album Peradam, in stores September 4th, 2020
Produced by Soundwalk Collective for Bella Union
All music produced by Soundwalk Collective in Rishikesh, Varanasi, Paris and NYC

Mummer Love
Jul. 10th, 2020 10:04 pmMummer Love is the latest Soundwalk Collective and Patti Smith collaboration to take the romantic ideal of the wandering poet as its starting point. 2016’s Killer Road and this year’s The Peyote Dance assumed the psyches of Nico and Antonin Artaud respectively, reworking their poetry against field recordings made in the far-flung locations of their searches for spiritual freedom. Mummer Love’s subject is Arthur Rimbaud, whose teen angst poetry is presented in the context of an underreported later period in his life, when he had given up poetry to become a merchant in Ethiopia.

Soundwalk Collective with Patti Smith - Mummer Love
Mummer Love is a continuation of Patti Smith’s lifelong fascination with Rimbaud, a seam that runs through her work in poetry, music and memoir, as well as her personal aesthetic. The title track is the only original Smith lyric here, a direct address to her object of fascination (“I have pulled into your town/I walk the streets that you despised”) but otherwise Smith interprets Rimbaud’s words through half-sung incantation.

When Black Holes Collide
Jul. 29th, 2017 07:56 pmFrom the Wire magazine -
What does it sound like when two black holes collide? Stefan Helmreich tunes in to how scientists listen to such cosmic cataclysms.

The sounds from space have arrived again. The Laser Interferometer Gravitational-Wave Observatory (LIGO) has, for a third time, delivered audible evidence of a cosmic calamity, an “upward sweeping chirp” that is now the signature sound of distant black holes spiralling into and colliding with one another. On 1 June 2017, the BBC affirmed that scientists can now “‘listen’ to those events as they vibrate the very fabric of the cosmos” and MIT news reported that the latest event “made itself heard … through a cosmic microphone on Earth”. Gravitational wave reverberations have become some of the most arresting sounds in today’s astronomy – swooping noises that might remind the well-tempered listener of a Buchla box bleep, an Autechre bloop, or a Holly Herndon arpeggio. But what are these cosmic sounds – and how have they been brought into audibility?

Cool Underground Music
Mar. 22nd, 2015 05:57 pmHere is another unusual piece of music - Clocked Out with "Time Crystals"
Clocked Out plays Time Crystals (part 1)
13 explorations of perpetual motion, pattern, and crystalline structures in musical form. Using an intricately designed constellation of percussive and pianistic sounds, Erik Griswold and Vanessa Tomlinson create a kaleidoscope of shifting sound colours.
From Ricardo Donoso , a beautiful euphoric track called Gallicinium.
Enjoy.

Drone Music
Aug. 27th, 2014 02:28 amOther areas of music i have been in to , as defined by any genre name, are those laminal pieces of music that come under the umbrella of environmental, soundscapes or field recordings which also include subtle electronic tweaks of natural sounds. Here is a couple of tracks from this amorphous genre.
Thomas Koner, first, and a track called "Permafrost" from the Cd of the same name.
The music here is very quiescent and drone like, almost spiritual in its enormity.
Long strings too can make music that seems timeless. Alvin Lucier and his Music On A Long Thin Wire is just that.
In his own words (1992): "Music on a Long Thin Wire is constructed as follows: the wire is extended across a large room, clamped to tables at both ends. The ends of the wire are connected to the loudspeaker terminals of a power amplifier placed under one of the tables. A sine wave oscillator is connected to the amplifier. A magnet straddles the wire at one end. Wooden bridges are inserted under the wire at both ends to which contact microphones are imbedded, routed to the stereo sound system. The microphones pick up the vibrations that the wire imparts to the bridges and are sent through the playback system. By varying the frequency and loudness of the oscillator, a rich variety of slides, frequency shifts, audible beats and other sonic phenomena may be produced."
However, Lucier admits a long thin wire is only used to impress, a short thin wire would have worked as well if not better, and he discovered that the best way to produce variation in the sonic phenomena was to pick a setting and leave the setup alone. He praised David Rosenboom for his ability to pick interesting settings. -Wikipedia
And finally , long telephone wires in the Aussje outback with Alan Lamb and his album Primal Image and the title track.
Enjoy

Aug. 8th, 2014 12:43 amThere is one documentary that i watched the other day via You Tube which is related to hauntology and sampling, and is a form of turntablism away from the scratching and looping found in hip hop. Tjis is the multi-deck soundscaping that Christian Marclay does. Now based in New York he uses old vinyl to create new musical compositions.
The doc is 42 mins long an is in French with English subtitles.
The live gig part of the doc with Thurston Moore and Lee Renaldo of Sonic Youth was particularly fascinating.

An Activity Morning
Aug. 7th, 2014 09:10 amBack to the musty smell of old records being warped and fashioned into new collages, the Ghost Box label is a cornucopia of hauntological delights. Here is The Focus Group sampling old library records, children's activity records, and other child orientated music as used in Playschool etc.
From the album Sketches and Spells a track called Activity And Scales.
Come along now children, let's all enjoy.
Remember those old government safety adverts from the 70's ? Here on the same label, The Advisory Circle have sampled such delights in Mind How You Go.
Enjoy. Remember, be safe.

A Rare Treat That Should Be Known Better
Apr. 28th, 2014 11:37 amThanks to
beer_good_foamy for posting this video. I have been enraptured by this track from the leader of Prefab Sprout ,( the one and only Paddy McAloon ) from his album I Travel The Megahertz.
The title track is a piece of music theatre that is haunting beyond measure. Paddy McAloon has created a unique soundscape and a musical language of yearning emotion, it is quite unlike anything else you’ll have heard. Prefab Sprout fans will recognize the lushness and melodic sweep but the timescale has been stretched to encompass a 22 minute spoken drama detailing one woman's roller-coaster ride through loss, new found love, and further loss leading towards an uncertain resolution. Narrated by the mellifluous tones of Yvonne Connor, the sweeping, highly romantic backing conveys an enormous emotional weight.
The project began when McAloon – forced by illness induced insomnia – found himself drawn into the twilight world of late night phone-in shows. His writers ear began picking out stories and patterns of lost love and loneliness.
It seems that this lush, fascinating mellifluous and moving score.has been inspired by other composers of deep melancholia. "Trawling the Megahertz" is Gavin Bryars vs The Blue Nile vs Ennio Morricone or some hybrid form of these soundscapers. Just brilliant!
Enjoy.
