Sigh. Were that it was this simplistic. 2/3rds of gun deaths are suicides, unrelated to anyone else's death. Auto deaths still vastly outnumber homicide by gun and the amount of those deaths that are suicides is nominal. Drug overdoses still kill the most people who weren't planning on leaving that day....
*nods* Exactly. And it's this sort of willfulness that makes coming to the table to have a clear and concise conversation so difficult. One of my besties in high school was killed in a hunting accident. I had another bestie in college murdered by shotgun-wielding ex-bf. I know about gun violence...but this cartoon, this half-footed philosophy does nothing. At all.
Well i have a friend , a female friend, from Texas , and lived in Utah for a while, but now she lives here in Faversham , and she was fed up with the whole gun thing over there. Hence she partially prompted me to do this post.
I have no problem with people taking stands, but this cartoon is just really simplistic while still being slightly hysterical. Besides which, the 2nd Amendment is not about tyranny.
Is she equally fed up with drunk drivers? And people who wield knives? And drug overdoses?
I'm a military historian by trade and the 'true realities of gun use' are than guns are for killing things.
Dave and I live in a country with very strict gun laws- some of the strictest in the world- and there is very little gun crime here to the extent that even a single shooting, let alone a mass shooting, is huge, front page news and it was a mass shooting of kids in Dunblane, Scotland some years back that created our present gun laws.
But that's my point really- I suspect that an awful lot of people see them as something to make them feel big and powerful. I'm a soldier's daughter and know all too much of what gunpowder weapons can do to the human body.
'Violence against the unsuspecting innocent takes all manner and shape'
True.
Where there are no guns, there is knife crime.........
Well, sadly, we Americans just ain't had enough kids killed yet. Maybe we're getting there. Another few hundred kids slaughtered should do the trick, maybe.
I know it. Three months to the day before my bestie mentioned above was killed by a gun accident/stupidity he and I were at the funeral of another friend who was killed with her sister, three of her cousins and a family of three in another car by a drunk driver who broke his nose on the steering wheel, left the carnage, went home and slept off his headache. This was before MADD and he received a light sentence.
