Well, if you have an original full of Asian characters it might, you know, be a good idea to cast some Asian actors. (On the other hand, 'Iron Fist',over which the same controversy is raging, is not quite the same as K'un Lun was, originally, supposed to have been founded by the survivors of a crashed alien spaceship.)
My main problem with the casting is that Cumberbatch is too young for Strange (but then RDJ was too old to play Tony Stark and that turned out brilliantly, so...)
And, of course, Disney and Marvel are well aware that the number of people who might boycott the movie because it changes a setting from Tibet to Nepal is infinitesimal compared with the Chinese cinema market, now the second biggest in the world and probably growing to the biggest before the movie is released. Okay, they only get about 20% of the box office compared to 50%ish in the States, but still...
I does seem to be a VERY sensitive subject here. No one is really sure about Dr. Strange himself, but they all say The Ancient should DEFINITELY have been Asian. I do love TS, but I'm wondering if this was a serious blunder on Disney/Marvel's part. Och.
I'm torn. On the one hand, the Old Asian Master stereotype is SO old that people almost reflexively look at it askance. On the other, if you were gonna swap out for a woman, couldn't you have chosen an ASIAN woman? Not that I have anything against Tilda Swinton; she'll do fine in the role.
