Still Busy But Looking Around Again
Feb. 7th, 2006 07:26 pmWell still got a heavy workload but i am now able to have a look around charity shops, cheap book shops and so on.
Popped into Sandpiper Books and rummaged through their back room for £1 stuff and found a book from Continuum Press "German Opera Libretti" which features the main operas from composers such as Mozart (Magic Flute), Beethoven (Fidelio), Wagner (Parsifal, etc) and Schoenberg (Moses And Aron). When paying for it i noticed something else at the cash desk and asked the guy how much it was and i was quite surprised he put it in my bag for free. "A Refuge From Reality,The Cinemas of Brighton and Hove" (Olio Books Hastings 1989) - FOR FREE!
Popped into Snoopers and found (from the usual secret section) a CD by Toumani Diabate "Kaira" (Hannibal 1989) for £3 and from Borderline a CD by Oxfords "flying Up Through The Sky" a compilation of their music between 1968 - 1972,a Louisville version of Jefferson Airplane with a female singer and a hint of Harpers Bizarre and Fifth Dimension as well, esp. in the vocal harmonies on Gear Fab (2001) - a new label to me - for only £1.
I missed seeing The Books at the Dome last Saturday due to working late that day. Recently bought their CD whcih was number one in the Wire end of year assessment of 2005. It's been on the player quite alot since i bought it. Great music too.
I found a five pound note on the seat i was sitting on travelling back to brighton from a train survey i was doing which led me to going down the North laines for the above mentioned items, and a really tasty Vegetarion pizza slice from Infinity Foods to tkae home.
Received my copy of Plan B in the post this morning which has a nice article about the Dirty Three and a vintage one of Young Marble Giants, plus the usual reviews, etc.
Also picked up a copy of Mojo as i was enticed by the cover Cd to the genius of Ray Davies - all covers naturally - and that, despite being way more mainstream than The Wire, has some interesting aspects to it. The special feature is the Kinks, and one item of noteworthiness is that Devo next month will launch Devo 2 ,five 10 - 13 year olds who will play the hits of the band for the youth market. Heaven forbid!
