Crawley Vinyl Goodies
Jul. 10th, 2007 10:47 pmYesterday in Crawley all day long!! Sounds like pirgatory i know! Doing the NHS bus survey, one early start from 6.40 am til 8.45am and then a second run between 3.30pm and 10pm. So i had a few hours to kill meantime, and this town is not the most exciting town to be in.
However on my window shopping adventure i discoverd a very large YMCA charity shop which had tons of vinyl for 25p each or five for a quid. So I dug in as i hoped to find some gems at least.
Well I came out with seven LPs all of which would have at least one track worth the money, and at £1.50 for all of them it was bargain time again. They are as follows -
1/ James Last "Non Stop Dancing Vol. 15" (Polydor) - contains a Deodato style funky version of "2001 - Also Sprach Zarathrustra"
2/ James Last "Non Stop Dancing 1972" (Polydor ) which contains a funky "Go Go" and "Get It On"
3/ "A - Z Of Easy Listening" (Polydor) a double LP iwth tracks by Oliver Nelson,Peter Thomas,Augusto Alguero, Ultimate Spinach and a latino thingy from Xylos Inc. Quirte a lot of cheese but some good tracks too.
4/ Burt Bacharach "Reach Out" (A&M) - a claasic selection of his tunes inc. the classc "Bond Street"
5/ Various "Stereo Sampler" (Rediffusion) - two great Pete Moore tracks plus the excellent "Sort Of Soul" by Birds n' Brass.
6/ and 7/ Two Bert Kaempfert LPs on Contour Records but nothing muchto write home about here except his own "Las Vegas" on the LP "Special" - which it isn't. Disappointing really.
So five out of seven is not bad. There was loads of 7" singles too ,and a huge amount of pre-recorded cassette tapes (remember those?).Maybe look at these next time i am in Crawley, which will be on Saturday. Surprisingly the town did come up with some goodies that i had not expected.
Wednesday, a journey to East Wittering to do a Tesco survey. On the way picked up another John Fahey CD "Of Rivers and Religion / After the Ball" from Borderline and the latest Mojo. Incidendentally in the last month's Mojo ,I think, there was a guide to the recordings of John Fahey.
In the current issue of Mojo Jonny Trunk on Leona Anderson; a review of the salivating 10 CD (and expensive) Bear Family label set "West Indian Rhythm";and ,what with a 10 CD set of Mute singles,"Mute Documents" could dent a huge hole in the bank account, and a guide to the recordings of John Barry. Also,it includes a curious "From the 80's" booklet. Why i ask?
A flyer from Transition Gallery in the post of an exhibition called "Borrow and Burn" (I do that alot matey, now where is that CDR) by Peter Lamb and Jody Williamson from 21 July to 12 August, with a private view on the 20th. Should be able to go to that, after this lot of NHS bus surveys is over with.
GC is back from the Czech Republic. She had a week there, and she gave me a gift from some castle, a string bookmark with a metal cat at one end of it and thimble at the other end,as shown below.
