The VG+ Ten Pound Charity Challenge
Jul. 16th, 2008 10:12 pmI decided, for better or worse, to do my challnege on Tuesday. I had some errands to do in the morning and this meant i only had the afternoon available.
This was the challange as outlined in VG+
"All participants make their way to one local charity shop with a £10 budget. Buy records, good and bad, known and not known and keep a photographic diary of the whole experience.
When your diary is ready and you have listened to the records purchased then you start a completely new thread in the General Natter Section entitled "[Insert silly vg+ name] and the £10 Charity Shop Challenge", your thread is not only a photographic diary of your day but also reviews of the records you have bought, and descriptions of the general merriment of your time in the challenge. Then all vg+ers contribute to the same thread with the usual mix of feedback.
There should be several aims to this exercise;
to reunite vg+ ers with the ethos of buying many records for under a tenner
to remind us all that charity shops are really peculiar places
and to find out once and for all which UK town has the best charity shops
You will need;
£10 sterling (or equivalent european currency EG EROS (sic))
a digital camera
The Rules;
The challenge runs from Saturday 12th July to Saturday 19th July
All purchases must be made on one single day only
Purchases can be made across a range of Charity Shops but entries from Ebay or proper record shops will not be allowed (exceptions for carboots if evidence can be provided of a non dealer purchase)
Your "£10 Charity Shop Challenge" thread must be posted by 20:00 on Monday 21st July, entries in other threads will not be considered.
You must not exceed your £10 budget
You must produce photographic evidence and reviews for each record
if you see a copy of Breakthrough you have to purchase it.
NO BULLSHIT
Extras
Ugliest / most interesting objet d'art (not part of the £10 budget)
most boring book (not part of the £10 budget)
best sleeveface
best disguise
best studio2stereo purchase
most interesting annecdote
Good Luck."

Anyway i laid out my crisp £10 note on the new table.

Then got ready with large canvas bag to do the challnege.
I decided my best luck at a good haul would be on the outskirts of the city as most of the chazzers centrally located tend to be on the expensive side but lower prices on the boundaries. This is due to higher overhead costs centrally i presume.
On the bus out to Portslade end of town i heard a conversation between a dad and his son,and he was explaining what vinyl was back inhis days. I guess the young lad has not seen the vlack stuff before.

First off in Boundary Road i checked out the Heart Foundation shop as the London Road branch no longer has its cheap box.
Not much here at all but i did find a copy of "Impact" for a nice 50 pence. No boring books found though.

Next stop a few doors away was Help The Aged. Would I fare better here?
Again mostly disapointing with the megre selection except for one VV classic - John Williams "Bridges" marked up at an odd 69p but worth getting for one track at least.
I was hampered a little by one guy looking at the VHS tapes on the shelf above.

Next up across the road was Scope. They had loads of classical stuff and loads of Andy Williams then this one -

Silver Convention on MFP - a collection of their greatest hits for a quid.
Back up the road to the next charity shop ,The Carla Lane Animal Shop, Quite a bit more records here but mostly dishearteninh crap. However found a nice box set of the original Jesus Christ Superstar complete with lrics booklet for a good quid.
And at last ia book i thought could be quite a boring yawn inducing read.

"Back To The Batcave, My Story Adam West"/ Normally they sell 3 books for a quid but the lady let me have it for 30p only.
Boof! Biff! Wowie! Zowie! (if you remember the original TV series)

So slightly further afield i caught the bus to Emmaus.

This one is unusual as it is also connected to a chapel which is full of top notch second hand clothes and quality furniture.

They have a good range of vinyl, and i really hoped to find some good ones here. I still had almost six quid to spend so i hoped to spend it all here. Normally a quid each but buy ten and you get them for a fiver.

First off was this minty Human League LP "Dare".

.. and this was the first "Breakthrough" albumi found so as per rules had to get this one!!

Another VV Classic -

A Hammond Gold album from Stereo Gold Award.

Plus another VV classic, "Stereo 68 Vol."". This is turning out to be a good day.

A litttle bit battered but a playable copy of Nancy and Lee's "Greatest Hits" also turned up.

Another comp , this time from A&M with some tracks i might have already elsewhere, but i need to get to ten to getthem for a fiver.

A Thin Lizzy album? Why not, they were a good band.

Yet another VV classic from the Werner Muller camp.

I have not had this one before but it sounds like fun to me.

Ooh a nice jazz album scored, Lionel Hampton LP on Lion Records.

and finally a nice copy of Kubrick's "Clockwork Orange" soundtrack.
So there is my ten plus one for a total of six pounds. Challenge done except i did not find an objet d'art nor did i go in disguise.
I was quite suprised how many VV classics was available and i am thinking of having a VV classic swap for those who haven't got certain ones and there are ones i still haven't found in the wild. Sounds a good idea ayway.
