A classic single from another band of the Canterbury scene along with Caravan. Hatfield and The North contained two members of Caravan, Richard Sinclair and Jimmy Hastings , and as it is breakfast soon i chose this track. Enjoy.

This morning, having just finished my eggs and toast , i watched on the catch-up feature of BBC iPlayer the first part of a series on British music in the 18th century , Rule Britannia , Music, Mischief and Morals in The 18th Century. Introduced by , broadcaster and writer Suzy Klein , it is a fascinating look at our cultural past in music. For me, the Beggars Opera by John Gay , is the highlight of the first episode, which was the first opera sung in English.

Here is a clip from the 1953 Peter Brook's film version of the opera.

Enjoy.

Laurence Gane "Introducing Nietzsche: A Graphic Guide" (Icon Books)

Why do you seek knowledge? For what purpose? Do you embrace the void rather then be void of purpose? Are you open to a Christianity that accepts the valid criticisms of Marx, Freud, Sartre, Jung, Durkheim etc.

This is the book to start that discussion.

The introducing series is always a great way to see a broad perspective on a great thinker and I always enjoy such books.

We are now at the halfway stage. We explored areas such as creativity, diversity and research methods. This was  a most satisfying aspect of the whole proceedings.

I did notice that the female member of our little group was absent and i hope that she not fallen by the wayside. The guy to the left of me, whose name i simply cannot remember, is still finding it a slog  m and some words he had to ask me what they meant, such as "rapport".

The time flew by and we had finished well before 2.30 pm

It has been such a lovely sunny day that with my bus ticket , and a renewed vigour, I ended up in nearby Faversham to have a pint of Norwegian ale , and to find some cheap paperbacks , the cheapest being 20 pence to the slightly more expensive one (Greek Myths) at a pound. The Ibsen plays was a give away twenty pence.

I felt quite tired when I arrived back from my excursion to Faversham but after s fresh brew of coffee I listened to a bit of BBC Radio 4 and now relaxing to a CD of Beethoven and his wonderful Piano Concerto No. 4.

Started reading the poems in The Shadow Knows by Adrian Mitchell whilst listening to some music in the background. After the Beethoven, some Ravel and his Piano Concerto in G Major, but then whilst in this exulted mood i had play some Bach again, and this time some of the Brandenburg Concertos, specifically No.3.

Here is a clip by the Freiburg Baroque Orchestra. Enjoy.

Via Facebook,  i have just seen the coolest thing. My old local pub in BRIGHTON  , the Evening Star on Google Maps with a full 360 degree view of the inside of this fine drinking establishment. It is almost like being there, and i can imagine drinking my favourite pint of Dark Star - yummy!  Link here -
