Peter Guralnick "Sweet Soul Music : Rhythm and Blues and the Southern Dream of Freedom" (Mojo Books)

This book is the absolute reference on soul and rhythm and blues of the southern states of the USA up to the seventies and early eighties.
The author interviewed all stakeholders living from this period (the book is from 1985) and it tells the story of the labels of the South: Stax, Fame, Hi Records... (with also a section on Atlantic who distributed these labels and had several partnerships with them) as well as the lives of its greatest singers: Otis Redding, James Brown, Solomon Burke, Joe Tex, Wilson Picket, Percy Sledge, Rufus Thomas, Aretha Franklin...
This book contains several hundred musical album and single references and photos of the time. In addition to the history of the Soul from the Gospel music, the author often alludes to the social and political context of the South which is often invoked and which also played a major role in the development of this music.
Narrated in the form of interviews, stories, sociological and political thinking, this book is a fascinating tome with anecdotes of these musicians, and the labels they recorded on , and packed with much information to inform and educate the uninitiated.
In conclusion highly recommended.
