Noticing that some of my LJr fiends write in two languages such as [livejournal.com profile] lisa_thecat mede me think of these questions.

How do you feel about commenting on other people's LJ sites? Do you comment in a circumspect way?

Would you comment on other LJ sites in a language that was not your own using a translator app or software.

Have you ever had to delete a comment? Have you ever had to ban somebody from commenting on your site.

I'm happy to comment but I try not to argue- your site, your rules.

I'll occasionally comment in French or Italian, the other languages I'm most comfortable with after English, but I don't use translator software.

I have deleted comments and I have banned but both very rarely. My rules are on the sticky page at the top of my blog and if people can't keep to them, they ain't welcome. I won't accept the usual range of -isms and -phobias.

I try to! Some people's lives are so different than mine that it's hard to say much beyond asking questions, but I usually find something to relate to.

I would likely only comment in another language if it was to ask about how to say something in that language. I wouldn't trust translator software enough to assume it was accurate. Seems like a good way to either accidentally insult someone or get laughed at.

Yes, wayyyy back in time I had a problem person and had to delete them. Not in years though.

I try to comment as much as possible.

I have a few Russian friends who blog in both English and Russian. I use a translator to figure out what they're saying, but I comment in English because I don't trust Google translate at all.

I've had to delete loads of comments and ban a few people. I used to have icons specifically for banning. I've had a stalker (someone I used to know IRL) and occasionally I still need to ban one of his socks.

I feel that it's less and less necessary to do.
Yes, I do, but sometimes it is not enough. And from certain point I try to comment mainly the owner of that lj, not his friends.
No.
Probably, but not very often.
Sure.

I have no problem commenting on other journals/communities. No, just straight forward.

Not usually, unless it's a good friend whom I know speaks the language and will forgive me my mistakes.

Yup, I have to both questions.

When commenting on someone's LJ, I try and remember that it's not my LJ; it's theirs, and they can say whatever they want there. I usually just pass on by if I disagree with them. Now, I sometimes will get a bit rough with another person who comments if they are shitty with the LJ owner!

No. I am far too impatient to even read an LJ through a translator app.

I've only had to delete I think two comments; both were complete trolls who were commenting on my appearance in my user pic. I banned them, too.

Actually, it varies. I speak more freely with some than with others.

No. I knew someone who sometimes posted in Dutch; I'd translate that via google, then comment in English.

I've deleted my own comments when someone else was upset by them, and have usually apologized. I've unfriended people, and they usually don't comment after that.

I try to be a good commenter! I like commenting, it's part of what I like about LJ. I don't always comment though, because I don't always have something to say.

I used to have someone on my LJ flist who would sometimes post in Spanish, and I would reply in Spanish or English depending on if what I wanted to say was easy or difficult (I can speak and read Spanish, but not fluently). She doesn't post anymore, and now the only people on my flist who post in other languages generally post the same thing in English (and post in English more often, anyway).

The only comments I've had to delete were spam. I've never had to ban anyone.

I'm commenting much less than I used to. Sometimes I'm blunt, but I try to stay civil. I hate dishonesty, and will sometimes call bullshit. Livejournal has evolved into a bland little universe, full of tribes of people with very limited views.

I have tried some of the free translator programs, but have found they are not very sophisticated and useful.

No, I dont think I've deleted a comment. Not a real person'scomment, anyway. There was a women with literally hundreds of sockpuppets, and I banned some of her more hostile ones, but I never banned her more reasonable alter egos.

I've never been particularly circumspect. I do try to be civil though and if I see something I don't like I tend to just scroll on by.

I don't usually try to comment in a language not my own outside of a simple phrase or two that I might know

I've had to delete comments and ban people, especially when the fandoms were rocking here.

I tend to see comments as a measure of how successful one is at posting. I can remember a few years back when a number of rather well known people were on Live Journal and one of their posts would garner literally hundreds of comments, and numerous discussion threads. I try to comment whenever I feel I have something pertinent to say, something that somehow relates to the post or the other comments. At the same time, when I post to my Live Journal account, I am hoping that it will intrigue others enough to comment.

Unfortunately I am not multi-lingual, so everything I do is in English. I have not yet had a need to try a translator service. But, who knows what tomorrow will bring. I suppose I'd try one if need be.

Fortunately I never have had to delete comments, nor have I ever had to ban anyone.
Dave

Some times I will question my comments on certain entries.
Thinking how they might see what I am trying to say.

It might be kind of cool to see what you write come out in another language. Although using the translator on FB leaves a lot to be desired. :o

I have deleted a bunch of spam comments and banned those commentors.
Hugs, Jon

I do have freinds who blog both in English or Russian from time to time. I do not have a problem with this. I do not use a translator.

I also have one lj freind who speaks Spanish - used to be two - but one passed away.

I wish I spoke another language.

I have had to delete comments in other languages, but they were spam (not on my freind's list) and only rarely.

If they are established LJ friends, then I don't have a problem commenting on other people's LJ pages. I almost always comment in a circumspect way, because so many people read things differently and life's too short for people to misinterpret (deliberately or otherwise).

I have commented on Russian LJ pages, heavily relying on the translator app. Generally, it has been a favourable thing to do.

I have both deleted comments and banned people from contacting me. One was keen on posting someone's home phone number to incite people to troll that person's life; another started out sweet enough, but was either copying my stuff to put on his page, answering my posts with totally irrelevent stuff and in the end, started to post me porn.

I pretty much only use English in my LJ. A long time ago when I had another Romanian friend we would talk in Romanian too, but that's years ago.

When I disagree with what someone posts I just refrain from commenting. No need to start up useless drama and everybody is entitled to post whatever they want in their LJ.

And I can speak (and write) in French too, without aid. In German, I need help. I even once conversed in Spanish that I never studied with the help of an online translator. I tried to use it as a point of reference and used common language sense to correct the typical aberrations these on line translators come up with.

How do you feel about commenting on other people's LJ sites? Do you comment in a circumspect way?

answer; My youngest son is a computer security expert (paid to go around the world to speak about it!!) so I am very cautious online. I speak of my kids with either family nicknames or "oldest son", "youngest daughter",etc. When I add a comment, I keep in mind that not everyone has the same beliefs and values that I do, though I'd be unlikely to friend someone "out there". I also do not give specifics about my location beyond "just outside of Boston".

Would you comment on other LJ sites in a language that was not your own using a translator app or software. No, I've never corresponded with anyone who does not speak English.

Have you ever had to delete a comment? Have you ever had to ban somebody from commenting on your site.

I love talking to people, and that extends to commenting on journal entries as well. I am generally very open; I don't feel a need to be guarded in my answers, but may give shorter answers if there's no indication that conversation will continue. It makes me happy why when I get an opportunity to write a comment that's a bit more in-depth, like this one!

I would not use a translator app; I don't think they are accurate enough to communicate clearly.

I have only deleted a few comments, and one of them was my own. I have never had to ban anyone, but I guess that comes with being relatively new and unknown. :) I don't know if that will ever change, with lj being as quiet as it is, but I am content with the quiet, so I'd be happy either way.

I always try to comment where I can - that's the real essence of LJ, after all, rather than being isolated silos. Occasionally, I'll venture into the "friends of friends" page as well, but that's only when I'm current with friends, which typically only happens once or twice a week, these days. I'll comment openly, though there are aspects of myself I'll keep more guarded, which I'd imagine isn't uncommon, especially with anything on the open web now trawled by all manner of web robots, and by extension, many big data companies and cuddly governmental agencies. (Again, LJ wins: if I want to talk about more personal issues, I can tag a specific entry as visible only to friends, or an arbitrary list)

I'd happily use a translator if necessary.

Not sure I've ever deleted a comment, other than spam, and thankfully, never had cause to use the banhammer, though one former friend did wind up going into a painful meltdown. I left it all up - it's not pleasant, but it's what happened.

I totally concur about commenting - it is the essence of LJin many ways as much as the blogs themselves.
