Master drummer Ralph Peterson continues to advance the continuum of his late mentor Art Blakey on Onward & Upward, his ambitious and expansive 25th release as a leader. On this historical release, due out September 18th, Peterson brings together 14 former Jazz Messengers and three Legacy Messengers to write a new page in the Jazz Messenger songbook.

Last year, Ralph Peterson and the Messenger Legacy released their first recording Legacy: Alive Volume 6 at the Side Door. With Bill Pierce, Brian Lynch, Bobby Watson, Geoffrey Keezer, Essiet Essiet and with Peterson in the drum chair, Legacy went on to receive worldwide acclaim and was regarded as one of the top releases of the year. Onward & Upward continues this trajectory. Says Peterson: “‘Onward and Upward’ is a phrase I got from my Rutgers Trumpet Professor and mentor Bill Fielder. This project, for me, is the natural and necessary next step in keeping alive one of the most important musical and bandleader producing legacies in American music history. It felt like a conclave for a group of artists that is finite and distinctive. The spirit of Buhaina was present and felt by everyone.”

Starting with some pastiche of swing jazz and vocal groups we have the following Brightonians.

The Speakeasy Three - When I Get Low I Get High

THE SPEAKEASY THREE are a vocal harmony group based in Brighton (UK) - they perform mostly as an a cappella trio but are joined here by members of THE SWING NINJAS for a cover version of WHEN I GET LOW, I GET HIGH the Chick Webb / Ella Fitzgerald classic (to be found on White Mink : Black Cotton Vol 1 - http://www.whitemink.co.uk )

Next up. The Flask Mob Jazz who perform weekly at The Mesmerist  , opposite Cafe Rouge ,where we had our last monthly lunch club. It is a cover of a tune by Lorde.

Flash Mob Jazz feat. Lady Armstrong - Royals

The pics were taken the last time eating upstairs at Cafe Rouge for our monthly lunch club.

Enjoy.

Thinking of Kid Creole  and his wonderful Coconuts here is a previous incarnation for August Darnell from 1976.

Dr Buzzard's Original Savannah Band - Cherchez la Femme  / Se Si Bon

From that same album -

I'll Play The Fool

Great album with the feel of the forties and yet swung with soul and disco grooves. Real musicians, real instruments, real recording, real music mixing (at the time) the modern disco beat with the retro 40's big band swing. And Cory's voice is priceless, just right for the feel of the groove.

Whilst in Faversham today, apart from a strong ale at the Wetherspoons pub, I found some vinyl going real cheap at various charity shops including one i was going to pay twenty pence for but the lady gave it to me free. From the Cancer Research shop picked up a Frank Sinatra collection for the enemous sum of 26 pence.

sinsin

From this top notch selection i have chosen "Witchcraft"

Then from Your Local Charity Shop (I Know, such an original name for a shop) this was the LP i did not have to pay for - it would have only cost twenty pence anyway.

The LP was a privately pressed a;bum by Terry Allen in 1975, which was reissued by fate Records in 1984 ,.It is called "Juarez" and is selling over ten quid a pop on Discogs so i have pitched it at a tenner to sell. I feel guilty now but then at the time she nor i knew that this is a lost unknown American classic that Sugarhill Records also reissued. Yes, Sugarhill, betterr known for its early rap and hip hop music.

juarez

Not the most interesting LP cover as it is all black with white lettering but from it i have selected the following track - Cortez Sail.

From Ashford town centre in another charity shop, after i did my mystery shop,, i found these two albums for 25 pence each -

tomleh

The track i have selected , and pertinent to the discussion from my meme about maths being the downfall of most of us in our formative years, I have chosen New Math.

The other LP  is by Kathleen Ferrier and has a track that Jocelyn Pook sampled on one of her albums, and thus i have selected the original - Blow The Wind Southerly.

klferr

Oh , and here is the Jocelyn Pook re-jig which she has mashed it up with "Pie Jesu"..

So rather a mixed bag that cost less than a pound.  Enjoy the clips.

I did not get to Herne Bay as i had ran out f time , so that shall be rectified in the week ahead.

Crikey, had a siesta this afternoon. Well, after the Spanish ale had a can of that Sixpoint Bengali Tiger ale , a strong one from the States, and then back in the village had a pint of Courage Best Bitter (4.0 % ABV) with my cousin. He had lager. Then back home a can of a Polish German styled Bock beer.

The CD's i got for a pound are -

Plus a BBC Music CD of classical music by Elgar,Vaughan Williams and Arthur Bliss. Yes, 25 pence each. Bargains!
