Do they (still) perform opera there?

You just inspired me... on our car trips to the Land of Grits, we pass a sign at one of the highway exits for the "Smyrna Opera House" and every time we pass it, I wonder to myself how such a tiny town in a seemingly uncultured stretch of rural Delaware would have ever supported an opera company. Sure enough, they didn't but it does have an interesting history!

Yes, they have done with a proper orchestra , as it was once an opera house but now part of the mighty Wetherppons chain.Usually they do them in the winter period.

You visit some of the most beautiful places. Are all the places so visually charming? Are the ppl friendly?

Ties in w. what a friend is saying now, having moved cross country to be close to family and the town is Victorian and charming but the ppl are cold and distant. It has been hard to make friends. Not friendly and while she wasn't expecting the Southern hospitality of the South, she's regretting the move. And although she is educated and does not have a drawl, being from teh South she is judged as a redneck and stupid.

In general, the people are friendly and accommodating , although some areas are less so. The majority of the places i visit in Kent and Sussex are absolutely charming and full of history.

There's so much to be said for these older stations, built with a sense of civic purpose, not merely utilitarianism. Which is why, I suppose, I've felt so uncomfortable with the work being carried out at the local station, where they're building a new passenger bridge. Which would be fine, except, we already had a perfectly nice subway, with gentle slopes leading down and up, perfectly friendly for anyone pulling luggage along, or in a wheelchair. But rather than supplementing it with the new construction, they've completely taken it away, including the Victorian awnings covering either end. *sigh*
