The authenticity of Xmas is rather moot. Based as it is on a pagan ritual of celebrating the winter solstice. Ethnically Jesus was a Jew anyway. So Hanukkah should be more appropriate. IMHO , religion as such, is a load of toss. If anything, i waver between atheism and a paganism of older times. So for now i shall call it Yuletide.

Although Jesus was a Jew, and although the Jewish people celebrate Chanukah, the Festival of Lights actually wasn't codified into Jewish law until about 600 years after the actual events. Since the original event was in the 160's BCE, the actual commemoration of the Miracle of the Oil would not have been celebrated widely among the Jews until approximately 400-500 AD.

There are other celebrations of light mentioned in the Jewish texts that might push this a bit earlier, but not a great deal.

Just relax and celebrate the return of light through the passage of the Solstice. :-)

To counter all the "War on Christmas" screaming that happens in this country, does it happen there too?, I fall back on the argument, that the shepherds would not be tending their flocks at that time of the year. :p
Besides of all those people screaming about the "War on Christmas" I want to know how many actually celebrate the true meaning of Christmas and how many are celebrating "commercial" Christmas. UGH.........
Hugs, Jon

Same. I don't believe any of the mythologies. But when it comes to rituals, playing bongos around the bonfire greatly outranks listening to old people mumble in Latin.

In Scandinavia, we never stopped calling it Yule. Makes everything a lot easier. :)

Now if you'll excuse me I have to go sacrifice a goat to Thor.

Hm... But Yuletide or Yule is period of time between Christmas and Baptism with regard to Christianity. It takes about 13 days after Christmas...
