Following on from the last post some more bands and artist i had seen live whilst i resided in sunny Brighton.

At the Sussex University complex i saw Yo la Tengo live From the Summer Sun album and one of my fave tracks is Little Eyes,

I remember seeing Jackie-O Motherfucker down at the Hope pub in Queens Road , around the time they released Fig.5 and from that album Your Cells Are In Motion

At the Old Market, a venue just across the border in Hove, i saw Faust live and of course Electrelane twice there, so one track by each is suffice, Electrelane and Only One Thing Is Needed.

Faust, one of the greatest Krautrock bands from the 70's  are still going strong, but when i saw them live they had been paired down to two or three members. Live, they are unpredictable and exciting, and often will bring out the metal  to add to the noise, such as a pneumatic  drill on stage which they did at the time i saw them live plus saws and fireworks, well you get the picture. A Faust live clip -

Yeah, extraordinary and intense band. So finally a bit of cool jazzier stuff to end with.
At the Phoenix Art Centre i saw jazz bassist Eberhard Weber and a track called Delirium from the LP Pendulum.

Looks like i will have to do a third part to feature ones i have missed out such as Devendre and Miss Newsom etc.

Enjoy part two anyway.

Seems especially fitting in the wake of another gun tragedy.

Phew! What a hot day it has been. I took the train over to Rainham and then caught a bus down to Hempstead Valley to do a mystery shop and then some charity shop perusing on the way back.

I stopped to have a quick bite in Chatham and with camera in hand took some pictures of the park leading away from the bus terminus.

I found four CD's for fifty pence each -

Le Tigre - Remix (Le Tigre Records)
Campag Velocet - BCBG (Pias)
Goldie - Saturnz return (FFRR Records)
Pizzicato Five - Happy End Of You Remix Album (Matador)

Really happy finding the Pizzicato Five album.. With the sunny hot weather and a god ambiance all round ,or  in the words of Lou Reed, a perfect day.

So now for the final part of the bands and artist i have had the pleasure to see live during my long tenure in the city of BRIGHTON. No wonder i go back there on a monthly basis lol.

One of the most unusual artists and unusual venues i have seen is Joanna Newsom at a  small church hall in the Kemp Town end of the city. She, with her warbly voice and a harp had the audience still and enraptured in her folky tales from Nevada City. At the time she had released her Milk Eyed Mender album, which had a terrific review in the Wire and the track i have selected is Sprout and The Bean.

It was at the Concorde where i first saw Devendre Banhart live , and another recommendation from the Wire mag, and from his Rejoicing In The Hands album this track This Is The Way got a rapturous applause from the crowd.

Another American guy whom i had the luck to see live and had a beer with is Jack Rose. He did a gig at the pub top of Trafalgar Street (name escapes me) with the Banski wall art outside. .. A few months later (2009) he was dead from an apparent heart attack at the young age of 38. He also did a session for John Peel.
He was also a member of Pelt, whose albums are also well worth getting. Here is his Kensington Blues.

Plus a bonus from his band Pelt and the album Pearls From The River a track called Up The North Fork.
However, never saw Pelt live, alas.

Next up from the African Soul Rebel visits at the yearly May Brighton Festival , and two outstanding gigs from these are by Toumani Diabate and Oumou Sangare. These were either at the Dome or Corn Exchange..

First off Toumani Diabate and Jarabi

Plus it can be so infectious and dancable. Here is Oumou Sangare and Seya.

Now for something totally different , a mainstay of the Brighton improv scene The Vitamin B12 caught live in a cafe on the  White Night Festival.

Vitamin B12 have made many limited edition LP's and never have released anything on the CD format

The White Night is an all night arts festival to mark the end of British Summer Time, when the UK sets its clocks back an hour.and everything is free except for drinks and food. But free music is cool.

Hope you have enjoyed this foray into my musical past, and that at some poin in the future i will get back to seeing great music live.

Enjoy.
