Some love stories lack romance. Some comic novels contain no jokes. Some simple stories are unsuitable for children. Fup is all of these. An old reprobate gambler turned distiller takes custody of his orphaned grandson. Years later they adopt a huge duck. The plot, however, is not the point. And defining the point involves reprising the book.
It was charming and amusing short novella, and a great book to read out loud. Some people have tagged this as a young adult or even children's literature, but it's really not - it's full of obscenities, gambling, and drinking (which is, of course, part of what makes it so fun). I have to confess I'm not quite sure what to make of the ending, but the book is delightful.
