She is an Egyptian-British singer known for her fusion of Arabic and Western music, particularly hip-hop. She once termed her music "cha'abi moderne" (modern popular music). Her music has been influenced by many styles including Maghrebain, hip hop, drum and bass and reggae.

Natacha Atlas was born in Brussels of Anglo Egyptian parentage. Her British mother was born Christian becoming Buddhist in the 1970s. Her father, of Egyptian descent, deeply interested in Sufi mysticism and the Gurdjieff philosophy of the fourth way, also studied Chinese medicine and Taoism.

Natacha was raised listening to music from both east and west and to be tolerant of all religions. That is how it should be!

De-Icer

Taking their harmolodics cue from Ornette Coleman, this Nottingham based group, Pinski Zoo, dug out a groove reminiscent of Last Exit and other cohorts. De-Icer is a live album and was released by Slam in 1993.

I saw them live at the Concorde in Brighton in 1993.

Arriva

Yep, I am going to complain about the lack of service from Arriva! Dept.of Transport should know about this.

Also, to get rid of the owners. As a German LJ friend commented "Normally Germans are efficient, but when I learned Arriva is owned by the Deutsche Bahn, I thought, "OK, say no more...". We had the same problem with the DB for a long time - delays, trains not showing up, more delays, etc. I really don't know what their problem is (other than maybe lack of competition and hence complacency). This really isn't the standard here, and it's kind of embarrassing they're representing our (normally extremely efficient) country so poorly."

Wish me luck.

Our local Iceland is closing down on the 14th. The nearest now will be Sittingbourne or Whitstable. Of course, they have bargains. Got three pizzas for three quid instead of five.

Had one today -

the Spicy Pepperoni Pizza

..and washed down with a fine quality Aussie Shiraz vino.

Rhyme

Blank verse seems much more popular than rhyme,
And I do not know why this is so.
And perhaps it is a lack of their time
But I do like the poetic flow.

Rhyme can be fast, it can be slow
It allows one to move and grow
It can be high, it can be low
It can manifest, it can show
That words are just soft dough
Kneaded into rhythmic patterns
So that the poem has a flow
And with that dear reader,
I must go.

Kim Gordon

The svelte and demure image of Kin Gordon adorns the front page of the current Wire magazine. As one-quarter of the now-defunct Sonic Youth, she is my muse and dream paramour as well as still creating avant-garde music at the frontiers.
